Red forcing tomatoes immune to Cladosporium leaf mold

, : Red forcing tomatoes immune to Cladosporium leaf mold. Bull Massachusetts Agric Expt Sta 519: 3-19

Tomato leaf mold, Cladosporium fulvum Cke, in greenhouse tomato culture in New England has been overcome by breeding and the commercial culture of a series of immune varieties designated Waltham Mold Proof Forcing. All of the known pathogenic races of the mold were used in the breeding programs. Resistance and immunity are dominant inheritance factors. This fact is recognized in the promotion and commercial culture of first generation hybrid plants combining immunity to infection and high productivity, e.g. Waltham Mold Proof Forcing (immune) x Michigan State Forcing (susceptible). The immunity to infection which for a period of time featured the varieties Bay State and Improved Bay State has been lost to new races of the pathogen. Waltham Mold Proof Forcing which derived its immunity to all races of the pathogen from Lycopersicon peruvianum and other ancestors has had an enduring immunity since 1945 and continues to be immune to the disease. The resistant and immune ancestors in the pedigree of the Waltham tomatoes are essentially L. pimpinellifolium (Jusl.) Mill. and L. peruvianum (L.) Mill. They are native to the Andean mountain region of South America. The fruits of these species number about 450 to the pound; those of Improved Bay State and Waltham Mold Proof Forcing number 2 to 4 to the pound. Tomato leaf mold is a serious allergen, causing asthma in some investigators and others working or associating with the fungus. The culture of leaf mold-immune tomatoes has removed this occupational hazard.
