Studies on the metabolism of methanol and formaldehyde in the animal organism

, : Studies on the metabolism of methanol and formaldehyde in the animal organism. Acta Physiologica Scandinavica. Supplementum 39(131): 1-103

Methanol was metabolised when it was incubated with homogenates and slices of organs from rats and guineapigs, and formaldehyde accumulated. Liver was most active, skeletal muscle and brain were inactive. Monoiodacetate, malonate, cyanide and disulphiram (tetraethylthiuram disulphide) inhibited utilization of methanol, and ethanol was a competitive inhibitor. Formaldehyde was utilised by homogenates of liver, kidney and lung. Methanol and formaldehyde were competitive.
