A test of precision of 25 equations was made for each of three species-Pinus banksiana, Picea glauca, and Populus tremuloides. Considering the independent variables of d.b.h. and height only, the equation that combines the highest precision and ease of use is: v = a + b (d.b.h.)2 (total height) where a and b are regression coefficients. With tree form as a third variable the equation having the highest precision is: v = a + b (d.b.h.)2) (total height) X diam. at 1/2(H-4.5)ft./d.b.h.
