Southern Turkmenistan and adjacent territories in Iran have been shown to be important centres of origin of a number of crop plants and fruit trees, the most interesting of which include wheat and barley, vines, pears, figs, the wild apple Malus turkmenorum, almonds, walnuts, Elaeagnus turcomanica and E. orientalis, onions, garlic, carrots, celery and mint, as well as various forage plants and cucurbits.
