The influence of age on litter-size

, : The influence of age on litter-size. Journal of Endocrinology 17(3): 280-285

In 3 related strains of rats the numbers of fertile females have been found to fall with age and with the birth of successive litters. In 35 rats belonging to these 3 strains, each of which had a minimum of 8 litters, the 2nd litter was generally bigger than the 1st. From then on, however, litter-size gradually fell until the animals ceased to breed.
