Compares the cost of clearing secondary forest (a) exclusively by hand labour and (b) with power saws and hand labour. Man-days/ha. required for (a) and (b) respectively are: cutting out undergrowth and lianes 20, 20; felling 60, 23; cross-cutting and laying 20, 10; and opening lines 80, 19. The saving on (b) is 60% in man-days/ha. and Fr.1451/ha. in money, the latter including initial amortization of the saws (cost, spares and repairs for 3600 hours).
