The physiological genetics of the bush and vine habit in Cucurbita pepo L. squash

, : The physiological genetics of the bush and vine habit in Cucurbita pepo L. squash. Proc Amer Soc Hort Sci 83: 657-666

Photoperiods and the application of several auxins had only a small effect upon the resulting morphology of homozygous bush, homozygous vine and bush X vine heterozygous genotypes of C. pepo squash. Both long (16 hr.) days and exogenous auxin enhanced petiole elongation suggesting a similar physiological mechanism. Reciprocal grafts demonstrated that the internode elongation factor was not translocated across a graft union. Foliar applications of high concentration of potassium gibberellate completely eliminated the gross morphological difference between plants homozygous for the bush and vine genes respectively. These results support the hypothesis that the bush gene represents a genetic block in the biosynthesis of an endogenous gibberellin.
