The response of alfalfa to defoliation by grazing animals as compared to clipping

, : The response of alfalfa to defoliation by grazing animals as compared to clipping. Diss. Abstr, 22: 1, 15-16

Grazing of lucerne for 1 and 5 days during the summer and 1, 5 and 15 days in autumn after frost was compared with summer and autumn clipping, respectively. Grazing at 10% bloom in summer over a 5-day period considerably reduced subsequent yields compared with clipping, while grazing for 1 day had no adverse effect. Trials involving simulated grazing gave similar results.
