The response of apple varieties to drought under Moldavian conditions.

, : The response of apple varieties to drought under Moldavian conditions.. Bot. Zurnal. 47: 821-9. bibl. 24

Premature leaf fall preceded by a yellowing of the leaves after a period of hot weather was a characteristic response of apple trees to moisture deficiency in the soil and air. A close relationship was found between premature leaf fall and the water regime of the trees. High temperatures caused serious metabolic disturbances which profoundly modified the water regime. Bienially bearing trees shed their leaves earlier in the off years than in the on years.
