The response of certain crops to 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in irrigation water. 2. Sugar beets

, : The response of certain crops to 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid in irrigation water. 2. Sugar beets. Weeds, 5: 3, 250-8. bibl. 4

The application of 2, 4-D at 2 and 6 lb./ac. in 3 ac.-in. of irrigation water caused a high mortality of sugar-beet seedlings (2-4 leaves) and reductions in stands at the 1-in.-diameter stage. The sucrose content of harvested beets was reduced by the 6-lb. treatment at the 1-in. stage. Analysis of leaf and petiole samples indicated a higher level of nitrate-N in treated than in untreated tissue 6-12 days after 2 Ib. of 2, 4-D had been applied at the 1-in. stage.
