The response of the mammary gland of the male mouse to progesterone and human mammotrophic substances

, : The response of the mammary gland of the male mouse to progesterone and human mammotrophic substances. Journal of Endocrinology 18(1): 26-31

Five strains of mice which were primarily insensitive to the mammotropic activity in human urine and anterior pituitary were all equally sensitive to the mammotropic action of progesterone. The strain strong A2 which is sensitive to the mammotropic substance also reacted to progesterone, the reaction being somewhat enhanced as compared with the other 5 strains. The sensitive strong A2 strain also responded to whole human anterior pituitary substance after previous treatment with progesterone. Two insensitive strains which were tested also became reactive both to whole human anterior pituitary substance and to the human urinary mammotropic substance when pre-treated with progesterone. A purified preparation of human growth hormone produced mammotropic responses similar to whole human anterior pituitary and within the limits of the experiment the major mammotropic potency of whole human anterior pituitary appeared to be present in the purified growth hormone fraction.
