The results of crossbreeding

, : The results of crossbreeding. S Kh Tadzhikistana (9): 27-30

The application of crossbreeding in Tadzhikistan increased wool and meat productivity of sheep and goats, and milk productivity and live weight of the local cows. Hybrid animals obtained by crossing Darvaz sheep (average live weight not more than 32 kg, wool yield 0.8 kg) with rams of the finewool breeds has considerably increased productivity (average live weight of rams reaches 75 kg, of ewes 55 kg, yearly yield of high quality wool 3-4 kg and over). By means of crossing male angora goats upon local female goats, a new highly productive breed was produced (over 60,000 head), distinguished by a high yield of wool (about 1 kg as compared with 0.4 kg of local goats), high live weight, good milkiness and adaptability to local conditions. As a result of the interbreeding of small, but well adapted to the hot climate of Tadzhikistan, zebu-like cows with Schwyz, Ala-tau and other breeds, milk productivity increased on the average from 500-600 to 2500 kg, and in single animals up to 6000 kg with butterfat content 3.9%; live weight rose from 250 to 390 kg and over. Average live weight of the hybrid calves at birth was 25-28 kg, and at 6 months age[long dash]130-140 kg as compared with zebu-like calves, whose weight was respectively 14-16 and 75-80 kg.
