The results of selective breeding over three generations for early flowering in Betula verrucosa.

, : The results of selective breeding over three generations for early flowering in Betula verrucosa.. Silvae Genet, 10: 2, 48-51

Experiments in selection for early flowering in Betula verrucosa gave the following results: (1) the flowering cycle can be reduced to 2 years, but a further reduction does not seem possible; (2) in some cases early flowering types produced flower buds only, and these were often androgynous, with reduced fertility in the female part of the flower; (3) the growth habit of early-flowering seedlings is the same as that of normal young seedlings.
