To test whether the action of B vitamins on carbohydrate metabolism was direct or indirect, the frog ovum was chosen as a suitable single cell. Ova were removed and 5.5 g. of them was suspended in 4 ml. Ringer solution without and with added vitamins and incubated at 18 degrees to 20 degrees C. for 24 hr. Vitamin B1 reduced the glycogen content of the cell; vitamin B12 and a mixture of vitamin B1, riboflavin, pyridoxine and nicotinamide increased it.
