Toxicity of wood preservatives for swine

, : Toxicity of wood preservatives for swine. American Journal of Veterinary Research 22: 401-405

Swine in late pregnancy were directly exposed to lumber recently treated with pentachlorophenol (PCP), cresote and distillate. Acute toxicosis was observed for PCP and cresote resulting in prenatal and postnatal deaths. Postnatal deaths were attributed to weakness which often resulted in crushing by the sow, and toxicosis from consumption of PCP or cresote deposited on the mammary area. Symptoms included starvation, poor growth and oral-nasal necrosis. Piglets surviving for 3 weeks appeared to have a greater tolerence for PCP and cresote. Toxicosis was not observed in swine having direct contact with lumber properly treated with PCP Or cresote when sufficient bedding prevented direct contact with freshly treated lumber.
