Variations in composition of leaves of Maryland tobacco as related to topping and methods of curing

, : Variations in composition of leaves of Maryland tobacco as related to topping and methods of curing. Tabacco. 60: 386-99. bibl. 8

The Italian Benincasa and the American Catterton strain were compared. In both strains air curing of detached leaves increased soluble N and decreased protein N, total N remaining constant. Starch and sugars disappeared but other components were practically unchanged. Curing leaves still attached to the stalks led to greater loss of dry matter than curing of detached leaves, and to a decrease of both forms of N, with a slight increase of nicotine. Topping increased nicotine in both strains.
