A critical evaluation of the European research on use of red wood ants (Formica rufa group) for the protection of forests against harmful insects

, : A critical evaluation of the European research on use of red wood ants (Formica rufa group) for the protection of forests against harmful insects. Z. angew. Ent, 57: 2, 167-89

The paper (which presents part of a study by the European Parasite Laboratory of the U.S.D.A. Agricultural Research Service) discusses biology, useful species, breeding and colony establishment, hunting area, aphid trophobiosis (including harmful species) etc., and the effects of ants on other predators, parasites, soil insects, and 16 hymenopterous or lepidopterous species attacking Spruce, Pine, Larch and hardwoods.
