Archaic pattern in the horse and its relation to colour genes

, : Archaic pattern in the horse and its relation to colour genes. Z. Saugetierk, 29: 42-46

The so-called " archaic " pattern is described. It consists of tiger-striping on the legs (more pronounced on the front legs), a dorsal stripe (sometimes with short, transverse branches), and occasionally a black patch on the shoulder. This pattern occurs in the wild horse, Equus przewalskii, and is also frequently found in the more primitive breeds of domestic horse. A similar pattern occurs in the Abyssinian wild ass (striped legs) and the Nubian wild ass (dorsal stripe and shoulder cross).
