Breeding of fur animals began around 1930, and in 1940 the total pelt production was 29, 000 skins. Between 1945 and 1965 the number of state fur farms in the U.S.S.R. rose from 22 to 105. The 88 situated in the Russian Federal Republic produced 2.3 million pelts in 1966; production in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania totalled approx. 400, 000 pelts. Total production in 1967 is expected to amount to more than 4 million pelts, of which 3 million will be mink.
