Factors involved in curd and flower formation in cauliflower

, : Factors involved in curd and flower formation in cauliflower. Proc Amer Soc Hort Sci 90: 252-259

Snowball M and 'February-Early-March' cultivars were used in studying the effect of temperature and day length on curd and floral induction. Curd and floral induction were accomplished by growing plants at 42[degree]F. The effectiveness of the cold treatment is dependent on the type of cultivar and is increased as the duration of the cold treatment is prolonged and as the age of the plant is increased. Five-week-old plants of 'Snowball M and 8-week-old plants of 'February-Earlj-March' can be induced to flower following a 6-week cold treatment. Both cultivars have a juvenile stage before the end of which plants cannot be induced to flower by cold. The end of the juvenile stage as determined by a 6-week period of growth at 42[degree] is marked by the production of about 16 true leaves in 'Snowball M' and about 18 true leaves in 'February-Early-March'. Cold treatment independent of day length is responsible for curd formation and flowering. In grafting experiments, the "flowering stimulus" was not transmitted through a graft union from flowering to vegetative plants or from cold treated to noncold treated plants.
