Prunus japonica was frost damaged every year; P tomentosa showed low winter hardiness; P. pensylvanica was winter hardy but produced small fruits; P. austere cropped regularly but had rather sour fruits; and P besseyi was frost damaged occasionally but made rapid regrowth.
