Methods for the detection of viral antigen and antibody to a feline leukemia viras (a preliminary report.)

, : Methods for the detection of viral antigen and antibody to a feline leukemia viras (a preliminary report.). J. natn. Cancer Inst, 45: 607-612

Passive HI and micro-immunodiffusion tests were used to detect and measure feline leucaemia virus (FeLV) antigens in cat tumour and tissue extracts. Various tissues from 12 of 13 cats with spontaneous leucaemia (lymphosarcoma) contained FeLV antigen; normal cat tissues did not. The predominant antigen detected in these tests is an inner component of the virion. None of the serum samples from 20 cats showed antibody to this antigen. However, by haemagglutination and focus reduction tests, serum samples from some normal and leucaemic cats showed antibodies to an outer coat antigen of the virus.
