, : On the taxonomy and phylogeny of the genus Festuca L. of the USSR flora. 1. The system of the genus and the main trends in evolution. Botanicheskii Zhurnal. 56: 9, 1252-1262

The genus Festuca is represented in the USSR by 68 species which are listed according to an accepted system. It is assumed that all the species originated from common ancestors in the mid-Cretaceous period. The initial ancient species inhabited open highland areas, but in the paleogen a group of lowland species of the section Subulatae (subgenus Schedonorus) and forest species of subgenus Drymanthele were formed.
