Peripheral blood eosinophilia in porcine ascariasis

, : Peripheral blood eosinophilia in porcine ascariasis. Cornell Veterinarian 57(1): 96-106

Eosinophilia has been produced experimentally in non-sensitized (helminth-free) pigs by infection with Ascaris suum, with peak levels occurring between days 10 to 15. Subsequent exposure magnifies these levels. The levels also appear to be dependent upon dose level and prior sensitization. The sequence of development of eosinophilia following infection with irradiated ova was noted. The cause of eosinophilia is disucssed, including the postulation that a possible relationship exists between periods of parasite ecdysis and observed-peak levels of eosinophils.
