Pregnant and nonpregnant ewes were given a diet of 800 g pelleted lucerne hay or pelleted diet comprising 50% concentrate and 50% hay. Feeding of the pregnant sheep was unrestricted, while the others received feed hourly during the 24 h. The portal and hepatic blood flow was measured simultaneously and, at the same time, glucose-14C, 10 micro Ci per h, was infused into the femoral vein. After 1 h heparinised blood samples were taken from splanchnic vessels.
