Studies On Microfilaremia In Dogs. I. A Search For The Mechanisms That Stabilize The Level Of Microfilaremia

, : Studies On Microfilaremia In Dogs. I. A Search For The Mechanisms That Stabilize The Level Of Microfilaremia. American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene 13: 57-65

Brugia pahangi and Dirofilaria immitis infections in dogs were studied by: transfusions of microfilariae into infected and uninfected dogs; attempted depletion of microfilarial populations by withdrawal of large quantities of blood from hypermicrofilaremic dogs; and the effect of splenectomy on microfilaremia. The data indicated that microfilariae transfused into uninfected dogs circulated for several weeks, with the greatest number recovered in a splenectomized recipient and the lowest in a dog into which a gravid worm had been transplanted. Patent micro-filaremias were not permanently altered either by addition or by withdrawal of microfilariae, nor were they affected by splenectomy of the host. Though the exact mechanism is not yet elucidated, the maintenance of a stable population of microfilariae is a manifestation of successful inter-adaptations between the filarial parasite and its host.
