Study centres, Universities and development

, : Study centres, Universities and development. Annls Gem-bloux, Gembloux, 76: 1, 1-6

Independent Study Centres have a place in developed and developing countries and have four specific purposes: (1) to encompass in a single effort the scientific and technical skills of a diverse group of disciplines with the aim of developing a single enterprise, a community, a region, or even a country; (2) to apply their skills and operational methods to investigating optimal solutions to specific problems; (3) to assume temporary 'responsibility for putting into effect solutions which are outside the responsibility of the -public sector and not sufficiently profitable for the private sector-this kind of activity arises particularly an developing countries; (4) to contribute to training ' on the job ' and the circulation of university staff and technicians in collaboration with enterprises and universities. To meet these requirements Belgian study centres are often attached to Universities or Research Institutes with recourse to their staff and specialists. They provide a useful means of carrying out development activities, and the pilot units they set up or temporarily manage provide an excellent opportunity for trying out research results in the field. Belgian experience in providing technical aid in Africa and elsewhere is briefly discussed and some comparisons are made with the Netherlands. J.
