In studies in the Apsheron peninsula, S.E. Caucasus, the activity of catalase and polyphenoloxidase was low at the tillering stage in Hordeum bulbosum and Phalaris and at corresponding early growth stages in lucerne and sainfoin; it increased with stem development, reached a maximum at flower-bud formation and decreased again at the flowering stage. Peroxidase activity was greatest at early growth stages. Early sowing increased the activity of the 3 enzymes.
