Experiments were conducted in 1960-62 in the Voronezh region on a leached, medium loam chernozem soil of 5-7 % o.m. content. Simazine and atrazine were applied at 2-6 kg a.i./ha pre-sowing and pre-em. and 2, 4-D at 1 kg a.i./ha. The weed flora was composed predominantly of annual species of which 63-64 % were grasses. Simazine and atrazine at 3 kg/ha before sowing gave virtually weed-free conditions throughout the season and were somewhat superior to 2, 4-D.
