The toxicity of Cheilanthes sieben to cattle and sheep

, : The toxicity of Cheilanthes sieben to cattle and sheep. Aust. vet. J, 47: 149-152

In feeding trials, Cheilanthes sieben (mulga or rock fern) was highly toxic to cattle. One steer died after dosing by stomach tube at the rate of 13.33 g/kg/day for 26 days. The prominent features were hypoplasia of the bone marrow, granulocytopenia and thrombocytopenia, multiple haemorrhages and a terminal temperature rise. A second steer was dosed with the plant at the rate of 8.1 g/kg/day for only 16 days and died 23 days after commencement of dosing. Again there was granulocytopenia and thrombocytopenia, haemorrhages were only moderate but there was severe sanguineous oedema. A bull dosed with 8.1 g/kg/day for 10 days developed granulocytopenia and thrombocytopenia, but there were no clinical effects. A sheep given the same dosage for 56 days was unaffected, except for a mild transient neutropenia. C. sieberi produced a syndrome in cattle clinically, haematologically and pathologically indistinguishable from bracken (Pteridium aquilinum) poisoning.
