The value of augmenting fecundity for increased mutton production

, : The value of augmenting fecundity for increased mutton production. Agroanimalia. 2: 27-33

102 single and twin Dorper and German Mutton Merino (G.M.M.) x Dorper lambs were compared for mutton production under intensive feeding conditions. Single-born lambs were 20% heavier (P<0.01) than twin-born lambs at birth, but the 2 lambs of a twin pair out-weighed single lambs by 66% at birth. Singles grew 30% faster (P<0.05) and attained slaughter weight (33.1 kg live weight) earlier (P<0.01) than twin lambs.
