The white-tailed kite in California with observations of the Santa Barbara population

, : The white-tailed kite in California with observations of the Santa Barbara population. California Fish Game. 56: 188

A population of white-tailed kites (Elanus leucurus) in the Goleta Valley near Santa Barbara was studied from September 1965 to June 1968. Only undisturbed grassland, shrub savanna, marsh or areas with cover crops or light grazing provided a suitable habitat and could supply sufficient food. Kites were predators on small mammals, most of which were diurnally active, and restricted their hunting to open and moderately open areas.
