Trans-location of C14-labelled photosynthate in nodulated legumes as influenced by nitrate nitrogen

, : Trans-location of C14-labelled photosynthate in nodulated legumes as influenced by nitrate nitrogen. Am. J. Bot, 56: 2, 187-94

Exposure of nodulated pea and subterranean clover seedlings to nitrate N (as NaNO3) decreased the proportion of 14C-photosynthate translocated to nodules and increased correspondingly the proportion going to the roots. Nodules on N-treated plants tended to become less densely labelled as harvest time increased from 4 to 20 h, suggesting greater retranslocation. It is also likely that nitrate stimulated respiration, thereby consuming more of the labelled photosynthate.
