Anticoccidial activity of monensin in floor-pen experiments

, : Anticoccidial activity of monensin in floor-pen experiments. Poultry Science 51(1): 139-146

Addition of monensin 0.0121% or 0.01% with roxarsone 0.005% to the feed of chicks resulted in increased body weight gains and food conversion. Coccidiosis-associated mortality in different groups with or without roxarsone was as follows: Unmedicated controls, 6%; susceptible controls, 5%; monensin 0.06%; amprolium (0.0125%) plus ethopabate (0.004%), 1.41%; roxarsone alone 1.82%; clopidol (0.0125%), 0%; and zoalene, 0.05%. Both monensin and amprolium plus ethopabate reduced the severity of lesions. The suppression was most noticed in the upper intestine [E. acervulina and Mivati), middle intestine (E. maxima and necatrix) and lower intestine (E. brunetti). Under favourable conditions both anticoccidials permitted some lesions caused by E. tenella. Immunity to all the above species of coccidia except E. necatrix was demonstrated following eight weeks on monensin medicated feed.
