Organochlorine residues in northeastern Alberta otters

, : Organochlorine residues in northeastern Alberta otters. Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology 39(5): 783-790

A total of 158 otters were obtained from licensed Alberta trappers during the 1980-81 to 1982-83 seasons. Most had been trapped in remote forested areas. Liver and lipid samples were analysed for 22 organochlorine pesticide and PCB residues. Mean concentrations of HCB, alpha-BHC and DDE were 0.025-0.036, 0.012-0.032 and 0.001-0.020 ug per g wet weight, respectively, in lipid tissue, and 0.004 or less ug per g in the liver. Mean PCB concentrations were 0.051-0.503 and 0.012-0.023 ug per g wet weight in lipid and liver respectively. These concentrations were low, and probably biologically insignificant. No other residues were detected.
