A small-scale experiment was set up to investigate the establishment of heathland on two abandoned grassland fields in southern England. Plots representing four replicated treatments and controls were established in the autumn of 1983. The rooting frequency of the vegetation on the plots was recorded in May 1989. The results showed that two treatments—rotovation followed by the addition of heath material, and turf-stripping—had significantly altered the vegetation in favour of both individual heath species and the frequency and richness of a set of heath species. Nevertheless, it is thought that where nutrient levels are low, and a seed source naturally available, heath vegetation will re-establish without intervention.
