Renesting in adult and yearling blue grouse

, : Renesting in adult and yearling blue grouse. Canadian Journal of Zoology, 612: 289-291

Eight of 31 radio-tagged female blue grouse (D. obscurus) that had 1st nests terminated before hatch produced 2nd clutches. Significantly more adult than yearling hens renested. All yearling hens that produced a 2nd clutch had 1st nests terminated during laying or early incubation, but most yearlings did not renest. Adult females renested independently of the stage of incubation when nests were terminated. Average size of 2nd clutches of adults are probably larger than those of yearlings, and average size of 2nd clutches of all females are probably smaller than those of 1st clutches. Most prenesting home ranges used during 2nd nesting attempts were in the same general areas and of the same sizes as those used during initial nesting attempts.
