Republicans Wrangle over Environmental Legislation

, : Republicans Wrangle over Environmental Legislation. BioScience 56(7): 8

In the 109th Congress, Republicans are wrangling over attempts to reauthorize two pieces of environmental legislation. In the House Resources Committee, Chairman Richard Pombo introduced his own legislation, HR 5018, to reauthorize the Magnuson-Stevens Fisheries Management and Conservation Act, bypassing the Fisheries and Oceans Subcommittee, chaired by Representative Wayne Gilchrest. Earlier this year, the House approved Pombo's Endangered Species Act reauthorization bill, HR 3824, which has been widely criticized as an attempt to destroy the act. In both cases, members of the committees considering the legislation, especially the chairs of the relevant subcommittees, have, however, challenged their party's attempts to weaken environmental protection.
