Characterization of the hydrogeological potential of the Guabirotuba Formation in the northeastern region in Curitiba

This paper is part of a research project named "Characterization of the hydrogeological potential of the Guabirotuba Formation in the Northeastern region of Curitiba". It has the financial support from the "Gesellschaft fuer Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ)", from the "Deutsche Akademische Austauchdienst (DAAD)" and from the "Deutsche Forschungsgeneinschaft (DFG)", and also from the technical and scientific support of the University Wuerzburg-Germany, through Prof. Dr. P. Udluft and Geol. G. Heinrich. It contains information about the hydraulic and physical parameters of the arcosic sands of the Guabirotuba Formation, mainly in the area limited by the hydrographic basin of the Irai River. The above mentioned region is located about at 15 km northeast from Curitiba, in the vicinity of Castelo Branco Park, municipality of Pinhais-PR, Brazil. The Guabirotuba Formation was originally described by Bigarella and Salamuni (1962), as a sequence of Pleistocene clays and irregular lenticular bodies of arkoses (or arkosic sands). Alluvial ones probably represented a system of alluviallans, according to those authors (1962), as well as an anastomosed drainage pattern in a playa environment. The maximum thickness of sediments is about 80m. Several tectonics lineations, including horst and graben, were mapped in Curitiba Basin. The arcosic sediments of the above mentioned region occur apparently as continuous layers, with thickness from 4 to 18 meters, normally underlying the pelitic sediments. The hydraulic coefficients of the arcosic sandstones were determined by means of the Theis method; concerning the permeability values from 1,22X10 (super -4) m/s to 1,96X10 (super -4) m/s, to the transmissivity the values stand at about 1X10 (super -3) m (super 2) /s to 2X10 (super -3) m (sub 2) /s. Storage coefficient values of the order of 5,4X10 (super -3) a 9,2X10 (super -4) were obtained. The hydraulic behavior of the aquifer is sometimes as a confined one, and sometimes semi-confined, receiving in some areas the contribution of the phreatic sheet. The total and effective porosity of the sandstones calculated by means of the sonic profile is about 38-39 degrees and 28-29 degrees . respectively. The field capacity of the soil calculated by means of the transformation of the gravimetric humidity into volumetric humidity, is about 100 to 150 mm. The general underground flow direction is from southeast to northwest, with hydraulic gradients of the order of 6X10 (super -3) , which in terms of flow velocities reflect values of approximately 3X10 (super -6) m/s. Pumping tests performed in many wells of the region indicate up to 22 l/s. Such results are important to show that the arkosic sandstones may be considered important aquifers, including a capacity production able to minimize the present storage of fresh water of Curitiba city (set.95), of about 700 l/s.
