Comparison of precursory phenomena before the 1975 Haicheng (China) earthquake and the 1978 Izu-Oshima-kinkai (Japan) earthquake; the possible effect of stress history on precursory phenomena

, : Comparison of precursory phenomena before the 1975 Haicheng (China) earthquake and the 1978 Izu-Oshima-kinkai (Japan) earthquake; the possible effect of stress history on precursory phenomena. Tectonophysics 138(1): 33-43

The 1975 Haicheng (China) earthquake (M 7.3) and the 1978 Izu-Oshima-kinkai (Japan) earthquake (M 7.0) were both preceded by the most noticeable precursory phenomena ever recorded in these areas. However, there was a pronounced difference in the manner in which these precursory phenomena appeared. Before the Haicheng earthquake very marked precursory phenomena were observed over a wide range, but the precursors to the Izu-Oshima-kinkai earthquake were relatively weak, and appeared in a limited area. These dissimilarities can be attributed to such factors as differences in the crustal structure and stress history of the two regions. Referring to the results of laboratory experiments, we will discuss the possibility that the stress history of the earth's crust affects the manner in which precursory phenomena appear.
