Comparison of the rheological properties of fine-sediment slurries from Eckernfoerde and Kiel bays, western Baltic Sea

, : Comparison of the rheological properties of fine-sediment slurries from Eckernfoerde and Kiel bays, western Baltic Sea. Abstracts with Programs - Geological Society of America 29(6): 439

Local areas of fine-grained organic-rich sediments (most >40% of clay) in Eckernfoerde and Kiel Bays may experience anthropogenic and natural disturbances which cause fluidization of the substrate and create a sediment slurry which exists temporarily as a component of the benthic boundary layer. Laboratory studies indicate that this material behaves rheologically as a non-Newtonian substance, and exhibits pseudoplastic (shear-thinning) flow behavior under simulated tidal shear stresses. Yield stress develops at densities >1.08 Mg/m (super 3) and exceeds 10 Pa (100 dynes/cm (super 2) ) at densities >1.15 Mg/m (super 3) . Removal of organic matter increases pseudoplastic (shear-thinning) flow with a corresponding decrease in yield stress.
