Effect of sorption on the removal of oil hydrocarbons during soil bioventing

, : Effect of sorption on the removal of oil hydrocarbons during soil bioventing. The Proceedings of Green

The influence of sorption on evaporation of volatile and semi-volatile oil hydrocarbons during bioventing was studied in bench-scale soil columns at a constant up-flow rate. Semi-continuous monitoring of evaporated hydrocarbons from soil was carried out, through measuring their concentrations in soil vapours and headspace. Partitioning coefficients determined in batch tests, together with monitored concentrations in the soil gas, allowed evaluation of the kinetics of hydrocarbons removal from soil. To predict transport of oil hydrocarbons through a soil column a porous sphere model, accounting for internal diffusion in spherical grains coupled with a linear Freundlich isotherm (to interpret the sorption data) and with an advection-diffusion-sorption equation, was suggested.
