Fractured chert specimens from the lower Pleistocene Bethlehem beds, Israel

, : Fractured chert specimens from the lower Pleistocene Bethlehem beds, Israel. Bulletin of the British Museum Natural History

Fractured chert fragments associated with remains of a lower Pleistocene fauna in gravels filling a sink or swallow hole have been examined to determine whether the fracturing was due to natural causes or the work of man. The evidence indicates that the fractures are due to the action of heat, percussion, and pressure, both before and after incorporation in the gravels. The possibility that some of the fragments were used as implements cannot be ruled out entirely, however. A report on the geology of the site, by S. H. Shaw, is appended.
