Internal-wave deposits in the northeastern Rockall Trough, North Atlantic Ocean; reinterpretation of deep-water sediment wave formation

, : Internal-wave deposits in the northeastern Rockall Trough, North Atlantic Ocean; reinterpretation of deep-water sediment wave formation. Acta Sedimentologica Sinica 17(3): 464-472

Considering the paleoclimate and paleocirculation, the internal waves could be generated in the studied area while every unit of the sediment waves was being formed. The formation of internal waves is closely related to contour currents. A reasonable hydraulic mechanism of sediment wave formation can be obtained according to the theory of internal wave. Generated under different paleoclimatic and paleocirculative conditions, the combining of two internal waves propagating toward the same direction, unique internal wave and internal stand wave which intersected sea floor successively would form a general basal climbing, intermediate asymmetric and upper sinusoidal shape in a stratigraphic section.
