Traces the history of sedimentation during the middle and upper Paleozoic in relation to the stages of the Hercynian tectonic cycle. In the early Devonian, deposition of clastic sediments predominated and continental volcanogenic formations were at a maximum (in the Caledonides). During the later Devonian submarine volcanism reached its maximum and formation of carbonate and saline deposits increased. Extensive development of carbonate sediments characterized the lower Carboniferous, which was succeeded by formation of glacial and coal-bearing sequences accompanied by a sharp decrease in the formation of volcanogenic, saline, and carbonate sediments. At the end of the cycle, in the Permian, deposition of clastic, mainly continental, beds again predominated, accompanied in early stages by deposition of volcanogenic formations. Simultaneous increase of submerged areas and total development of sediments throughout the cycle prove that transgression was due to continental subsidence rather than changes in the volume of the hydrosphere or sea level.
