Lithostratigraphy and metallogenic implications of komatiite - banded iron-formation - felsic volcanic rocks of the Archean Woodburn Lake group, Pipedream Lake, central Churchill Province, Northwest Territories

, : Lithostratigraphy and metallogenic implications of komatiite - banded iron-formation - felsic volcanic rocks of the Archean Woodburn Lake group, Pipedream Lake, central Churchill Province, Northwest Territories. Current Research - Geological Survey of Canada Pages 101-110

Detailed mapping, stratigraphic investigations, and metallogenic studies of rocks belonging to the Woodburn Lake group were initiated in the vicinity of Pipedream lake. Field relationships suggest the following stratigraphic sequence of rock types (from oldest to youngest): quartzite, komatiite suite, intermediate/felsic volcaniclastic and epiclastic rocks including iron-formation, siliciclastic sedimentary rocks. The intermediate to felsic volcaniclastic and associated epiclastic rocks host a newly discovered massive sulphide showing, several styles of vein-type gold, plus numerous occurrences of sulphide-bearing iron-formation. Evidence to date suggests that the massive sulphide, polymetallic vein gold, and possibly the pyrrhotite-rich sulphide-bearing iron-formation are directly linked to synvolcanic/synsedimentary processes. Mineral deposit types observed (i.e. massive sulphide; polymetallic gold; sulphide iron- formation; distal komatiite flow facies with poor potential for Ni mineralization) are consistent with combined lithostratigraphic/volcanological/paleoenvironmental interpretation.
