Mapping of inaccessibility escarpment slopes of left abutment of Supa Dam, Karnataka, utilizing stereo-terrestrial photogrammetry

, : Mapping of inaccessibility escarpment slopes of left abutment of Supa Dam, Karnataka, utilizing stereo-terrestrial photogrammetry. Journal of Engineering Geology 14(1-2): 61-68

A concrete dam was under construction across a 200 m deep gorge section of Kali river at Supa, Uttar Kanara district, Karnataka. The left abutment of the Dam formed an escarpment in the upper portion. Being inaccessible it could not be mapped by conventional methods. Aerial photogrammetry was also unsuitable for the purpose due to the steepness of slopes. Therefore, recourse to stereo-terrestrial photogrammetry was resorted to, to map this portion and the adjoining areas. The rocks exposed in the area belong to intricately folded Dharwar meta-sedimentaries, intruded by basic dykes. Accurate large scale topographic and geological maps were prepared on 1:500 scale with a contour interval of 5 m. various significant geological details that could easily be mapped included weathered basic dykes, prominent shear zones and joint planes, traces of bedding, faults and joints, and attitudes of planar surfaces. Folding pattern of the rocks was well deciphered as various fold axes could easily be correlated on the left and right abutments with precise levels. Terrestrial photogrammetry not only made it possible to accurately map an inaccessible zone but also helped in expeditious completion of geological exploration. It, therefore, calls for utilisation of this advanced technique, as a matter of routine wherever applicable for preparation of large scale topographic and thematic maps of project areas, with speed, economy and precision.
