Marine oscillation event stratification; an example from Late Cretaceous Bagh carbonate sequence of Narmada Valley, India

, : Marine oscillation event stratification; an example from Late Cretaceous Bagh carbonate sequence of Narmada Valley, India. Memoir - Geological Society of India 46(Pages 15-24

The Late Cretaceous Bagh carbonate sequence was deposited in an epicontinental basin in the central and western parts of India. The shallow marine carbonates of the Bagh basin were very sensitive to eustatic sea level variations. The imprints of these events have been recorded in their stratification in the form of hardgrounds. Three hardground surface are recognised at different levels showing differences in the characters of the surface, in the underlying and the overlying sediments and in biological behaviour. Synsedimentary submarine erosion and deposition of time-averaged units are the interesting features of Bagh sedimentation. The slow rise in the water depth, but sharp drop at the hardgrounds indicate an asymmetric cycle. The asymmetry is due to the differential subsidence, sediment supply, submarine erosion and sediment bypassing at different locations. These marine oscillations were of short term and low frequency.
