, : Micromorphological diagnostics of the transformation of soil properties in steppe and semidesert soils upon their irrigation in the lower Volga region. Eurasian Soil Science 35(6): 588-598

Differences in the microfabric of irrigated and rainfed steppe and semidesert soils are shown. Irrigation of steppe soils increases their microheterogeneity and results in the loss of structure, peptization and migration of humus, dispersion of clay minerals, and formation of melanons; the same impact on semidesert soils results in some improvement of their microaggregation, an increase in the humus content of soil plasma in separate microzones, and decompaction of the soil mass. Different intensities of the transformation of soil microstructure upon irrigation and the particular mechanisms of this transformation are revealed. It is shown that the microfabric of irrigated soils differs from that of meadow and vertic soils of steppe and semidesert regions.
