Observations on the Magnesian Limestone reefs of north-eastern Durham

, : Observations on the Magnesian Limestone reefs of north-eastern Durham. Bulletin of the Geological Survey of Great Britain 15(Pages 71-82

The Magnesian Limestone in northeastern Durham, northern England, is a Permian reef-bearing formation that has been extensively studied. As a result of recent investigations on the structure of these reefs, the idea is advanced that marine calcareous algae were active and even dominant in reef construction rather than the bryozoans that have usually been assigned this role. The outer face of the middle Magnesian Limestone reef was steep and the adjacent water was deep. It is suggested that bedded breccias are due to submarine slumping down these steep faces rather than related to formerly interbedded evaporites. Similarities with Permian reef structures in Texas and Germany are noted. A section on the microscopic structures, by F. W. Anderson, is included.
